$11.95 NZD

Certified Organic Long-Grain Rice

Organic Black Rice

Aromatic Indian whole-grain rice with a deep natural colour, earthy flavour and pleasantly firm texture.

SpiceBloom Organic Black Rice is an unpolished, long-grain rice with its dark bran layer intact. It has a slightly nutty, earthy flavour and develops a deep purple-black colour as it cooks.

Use it as a colourful base for rice bowls, curries, stir-fries, pilafs and grain salads. Its distinctive colour and firmer texture also work well in rice puddings and other sweet dishes.

Cooking note: Black rice generally requires more water and a longer cooking time than ordinary white rice. Cooking results may vary slightly depending on the pot, heat level and preferred texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does black rice taste compared with white rice?

Black rice has a fuller, slightly nutty and earthy flavour. Its cooked texture is generally firmer and more substantial than ordinary white rice.

Why does black rice turn purple when cooked?

The naturally dark bran layer releases colour during cooking, giving the grains and cooking liquid a deep purple-black appearance.

Is this black rice gluten-free?

Rice is naturally gluten-free. However, this product is processed in a facility that also handles wheat and may contain traces, so customers avoiding gluten should consider the cross-contact statement.
